For this project we got to take a moment and celebrate some unsung heroes, that’s the crew that literally keeps the water flowing in Kansas City, the amazing people at KC Water. If it’s freezing outside, they’re making sure we still have water. If it’s 103 degrees outside, they’re really making sure we still have water. And in uncertain times, like during the lockdown with Covid in 2020, the KC Water crews were still doing their job to make sure we all had safe and clean water in our homes.

Did you know? With 320 square miles of service territory, KC Water manages a service area larger than the cities of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, and Miami!

We were lucky to get to collaborate with the City of Kansas City on this two-wall, cornerpiece mural. After our very first meeting with the City we knew the person for the job was Scribe. This beast of a mural spans two walls, at its peak it’s 30 feet tall, the left panel is about 40 feet long, and the right panel is 34 feet long. Through the amazing imagination and artistry of Scribe, he was able to create a mural that shows an abbreviated take on the water cleaning process. Showing the water being piped in from the river, cleaned through a series of pipes, and then giving life to an amazing saxophone fountain, here in The City of Fountains, just a few hundred feet from the Historic Jazz District at 18th and Vine.

The City Manager’s office asked Scribe for an artist statement, and no one can say it better than the artist that created this beautiful and powerful mural:

“The Kansas City Water Department takes immense pride in maintaining and improving the city's essential water infrastructure, ensuring a reliable supply for all residents. Their dedicated team of heroes works tirelessly behind the scenes, often unnoticed, to keep our water clean and flowing. City pride is reflected in the community’s support for these unsung heroes and the art installation celebrating their efforts. By embracing their role as stewards of this vital resource, the department not only enhances the quality of life but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the vital role water plays in our daily lives.” - Scribe
