This was our biggest wall to date at 220 feet long! For this project, we partnered with the Historic West Bottoms Association and won a ReBuildKC Grant for the mural and to develop, and supply water to the new West Bottoms Garden.

For this massive mural, the artists dug in deep and spent a lot of time researching the history of the area. The mural celebrates that history with a giant painting of a Native American who first settled on the land. It also features Union Depot, the first building built in the area. A giant locomotive and a huge gar also pay homage to the area.

All of this art sits atop a field of 14 Monarch butterflies, honoring Kansas City’s historic Negro Leagues Baseball team and their amazing roster of players, from Jackie Robinson to Buck O’Neil, Ernie Banks, Satchel Paige, and so many more legends. The 14 Monarchs represent the 14 titles and championships that they won from 1923-1957.

The reveal event brought out city officials and TV station news cameras. Since the mural went up, all area potholes have been filled and the nearby building has been fully flipped and restored, cleaning up the neighborhood.
