This was a very special project for SprayKC. Over the past three years we have worked with and curated murals in this amazing space, beneath the I-670 Viaducts in The West Bottoms. And until recently this space did not have a name, but now it does! It’s called Liberty Courtyard and in May 2024 we worked with the amazing artists at Evolution to create a mural to name the space. 

This project brought together SprayKC, collaborating once again with the Historic West Bottoms Association, MODOT, and the City of Kansas City Missouri to paint this mural during the annual celebration called West Bottoms Heritage Days.

The West Bottoms area, once notorious for its muddy parking lot, has become a destination with the introduction of a new event and parking space.

Tom Esselman, president of the Historic West Bottoms Association, spoke about the transformation.

"It does provide greater access, easier parking, more green space, and more cultural and art exhibits," Esselman said.

The Liberty Courtyard, as it’s now known, was initially rebuilt to address infrastructure and water retention issues. However, it has evolved into an outdoor space for the city and the West Bottoms, offering more than just parking.

Esselman elaborated on the significance of the new space.

"It means that when you come here for First Fridays, you'll learn about all the things that happen in the West Bottoms outside of First Fridays," he said.
